Heroines

Here we will acknowledge heroines -
women who exemplify maternal values in spite of challenges of circumstance
or culture.

Sacawagea joined Louis and Clark in their expedition
to explore the far West. She bore a child, breastfed the child, and
cared for the child while surrounded by men. She worked as an interpreter
and guide. Her negotiations with Indians averted violence.
She is dramatic proof that a very young woman can do important work with
her young child by her side, even in circumstances that are dangerous.
In the above photograph she is guiding the men through the Rocky Mountains.
